By now, we’re all well aware that not getting enough sleep has serious health consequences. Getting less than the recommended 7 to 9 hours will ruin your mood, destroy your next-day workout, increase your risk of heart disease and dementia, inhibit your ability to retain memories and learn new skills, and even make you gain weight. But, given how beneficial sleep is for you, you’d think that the more you get of it, the better it is right?

Strangely—and this surely comes as a shock to us—that’s not entirely right. A new paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association recently analyzed 74 studies on the quality and length of sleep of over 3.3 million people, and found that those who slept for 10 hours were 30 percent more likely to die prematurely, were 49 percent more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, and had a 56 percent increased risk of stroke than those who slept for 8 hours. This puts a bit of a hole into Gwyneth Paltrow‘s “Clean Sleeping” routine, which recommends getting a full 10 hours to those who are able to do so.

Of course, the study has its limitations, chiefly in that the results were self-reported rather than observed. Additionally, the study did not control for other factors that could cause both “extreme sleep” and a heightened risk for premature death, such as feeling depressed after losing a job or getting a divorce.

Plus, a study released last May found that you can counteract the negative impact of not getting enough sleep during the week by sleeping in on the weekends, though this method is still hotly debated by scientists.

Still, the consensus in the scientific community is that the best possibly thing you can do for your sleep is to maintain a regular bedtime, be consistent, and stick to the recommended 7 to 9 hours per night.
