This Is the Most Dangerous City in America

From violent crime to the effects of COVID, your life is in the most danger in these U.S. cities.

circle

Danger can come in many forms—from eating undercooked chicken to riding your bike at night with no lights on. But what makes a city more dangerous than others? It's not just about the crime rate. There are a number of factors that are just as important to consider, from dangerous drivers to natural disasters. That's where we come in with our list of the 100 most populous cities in the United States, ranked from the safest to the most dangerous city of them all.

The first metric we looked to determine each city's danger level was the number of violent crimes per 100,000 people, as recorded by the FBI. Next, we investigated how many pedestrians have been killed in traffic accidents using data from Smart Growth America's annual report.

Of course, danger can also come from non-human factors. So to gauge elemental risk we used ATTOM's natural disaster index, which measured the likelihood of earthquakes, floods, hail, hurricane storm surges, tornadoes, and wildfires to determine an overall risk level based on a 100-point scale. (This data didn't cover Hawaii, so we excluded it from Honolulu's calculation.) Finally, we measured healthcare with two metrics: premature deaths (years of potential life lost before age 75 per 100,000 people) from the County Health Rankings, and COVID-19 deaths per capita, based on data from USA Facts. We then gave all five metrics a weighted value and ran them through our exclusive algorithm to determine how they scored on our Danger Index.

Our results showed there was little connection between geographic location and danger; for example, Dallas, Texas was in the top third of our rankings, while nearby cities Garland and Irving both ranked in the bottom quarter. The locations of the top 10 cities ranged from the Mid-Atlantic to the West Coast, with New England coming through relatively unscathed. (This could be due to measuring cities rather than metro areas; New England has smaller cities proper, which sprawl together into populous conurbations that cross state lines.)

Where did your nearest big city rank? Read on to find out the most dangerous city in the country. And for the place that has the most detractors in the U.S., This Is the Most Hated State in America.
