The members of the Kardashian family have lived nearly every moment of the past decade in public. In addition to the 16 seasons—and counting—of their E! reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, they've let fans in on social media, leading people to feel like they know Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie, Kendall, Rob, and Kris. But everyone has their secrets and there are still some Kardashian facts that even serious fans might not know. From the family member who founded a church to the Kardashian sister who claims to be able to smell cavities, these are the craziest facts you never knew about one of the world's most famous families.
1 | Kylie got her start in a Sears commercial.
YouTube/SearsKylie Jenner has certainly made a name for herself within the Kardashian-Jenner clan—especially with her beauty brand, Kylie Cosmetics, skyrocketing her to becoming the "world's youngest self-made billionaire."
But where did the youngest member of the family first start doing solo work? At just 12 years old, she made her modeling debut in a commercial for Sears in 2010!
2 | Kris founded her own church.
ShutterstockIn between being the "momager" of her large family and running her own production company, Jenner Communications, Kris Jenner found time to add "opening a church" to her lengthy résumé. During a 2011 interview with Piers Morgan, her second daughter, Kim Kardashian, confirmed that she and her sisters helped to fund Kris' California Community Church.
3 | Khloe has memory problems.
DFree/ShutterstockKhloe Kardashian, the third oldest member of the family, was involved in a serious car accident in 2001. The 16 year old ended up being tossed through the windshield and suffering a head injury. In the years since, Khloe has opened up about her long-term problems with memory loss that resulted from the trauma.
"Now I can’t remember anything…and I think it’s getting worse," she admitted in a 2013 episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. "It’s really irritating and frustrating and kind of sad that I can’t remember so many things from my childhood."
4 | Kim claims she can smell cavities.
ShutterstockWhen late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld asked about her hidden talent in a 2016 interview for Harper's Bazaar, Kim claimed that she can "smell" cavities on other people.
"I can smell when someone has a cavity," she said. "It's a very specific smell—not a bad-breath smell—but something that is really strong." And while it hasn't been proven, we'll just take her word on this one.
5 | Kris owns black toilet paper.
ShutterstockDuring a home interview with The New York Times in 2015, it was revealed that one of Kris' bathrooms was covered in black marble that matched her black toilet paper. Kim, however, isn't a fan of the product, which became a novelty item in the U.S. around 2006. "The toilet paper’s black," she complained of her mom's bathroom in a 2013 episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians."I like to see what ... I’m wiping.”
6 | And Kim once promoted Charmin.
WENN Rights Ltd / Alamy Stock PhotoSpeaking of toilet paper, before she became one of the most famous people in the world, Kim served as a spokesperson for Charmin, attending ribbon-cutting ceremonies when the company opened up public restrooms in New York City in 2010.
"I'm happy to join Charmin as they give the gift of the restrooms near Times Square," Kim said in a statement at the time.
7 | Khloe washes her sheets every two days.
ShutterstockWashing and changing your sheets is universally viewed as important, but there are different opinions about how often you should do it. Some say a week, while others say every two weeks. But for Khloe Kardashian, even that's not often enough.
In 2016, she admitted on her website that she sticks her sheets in the washer every two days. "Obviously, if I'm not in town or not sleeping in my bed I'll wait a little, but the sheets definitely go in the wash every time after a spray tan," she wrote.
She did admit that her cleaning habits are a little excessive. "Maybe I'm just a little bit more fanatical about being clean than I thought," she wrote.
8 | And she only sleeps on the left side of her face.
ShutterstockIn 2015, while addressing rumors about her evolving appearance, Khloe admitted to New Beauty that her best friend recommended she get fillers because she thought the right side of Khloe's face was flat from always sleeping on it. "I don’t think people thought about these things before Botox and fillers became so accessible," she said. "Now, I try to sleep on my left side."
9 | Kim released a song called "Jam" in 2011.
The-DreamKim's done a lot over the years, and that includes releasing a pop song in 2011 called "Jam (Turn It Up)." All the proceeds allegedly went to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, but that still wasn't enough to earn accolades from critics, who called her "the worst singer in the reality TV universe."
Thankfully, however, Kim's since left the music business to her now-husband, Kanye West.
10 | Kim was denied a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
ShutterstockBeing one of the biggest names in Hollywood is apparently not enough to get Kim a spot on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. When Kanye publicly advocated for his now-wife to be a part of the tourist attraction in 2013, he was quickly shut down.
"We don't have a category for reality stars on the Walk of Fame," spokeswoman Ana Martinez told the New York Daily News. "The committee would be happy to consider reality stars if and when they get nominated or win an Emmy, Oscar, Grammy or other major award given for a performance."
11 | Rob changes his phone number 10 times a year.
ShutterstockIn a 2013 interview with Us Weekly, Rob Kardashian revealed a bunch of fun facts about himself, including that his favorite sibling is Kylie (sorry to the rest of Kardashian-Jenner clan) and that he once drank so much lemonade he had to get his tonsils removed. He also admitted that he changes his phone number 10 times a year! "And I don't ever save my contacts," he added.
12 | Kourtney is the only sister who went to college.
ShutterstockThe Kardashian-Jenners are living proof that you don't need a college degree to be a billionaire. In fact, only one of the famous sisters has a college degree—Kourtney Kardashiangraduated from the University of Arizona, where she earned a bachelor's degree in theater.
And while Rob followed Kourtney's lead and earned a degree from the University of Southern California, none of the other sisters attended college.
13 | Her first job was as a movie production assistant.
ShutterstockAfter college, Kourtney got a job as a movie production assistant. In 2010, she told Us Weekly that the gig involved a lot of yelling "cut" and "rolling" every day. Definitely less luxurious than her life nowadays.
14 | And she also acted on a soap opera.
ABCKourtney has plenty of television credits on her résumé after starring on her family's reality show for 12 years, but she didn't stop at reality TV. In 2011, she made her acting debut on an episode of ABC's famous soap-opera One Life to Live, where she played a lawyer named Kassandra Kavanaugh.
15 | Anyone who enters Kris' house must sign a non-disclosure agreement.
ShutterstockDon't expect to be spilling secrets if you ever get the privilege of being invited to Kris' luxurious home. Her New York Times' interview also revealed that the famous mother has a pile of non-disclosure agreements on a table in her foyer—a must-sign for anyone who enters the home. Above the papers sits a tiny sign that states: "What we say here, what we see here, let it stay here, when we leave here."
16 | And she is very serious about her table settings.
ShutterstockWhen Kris released her own cookbook, In the Kitchen with Kris: A Kollection of Kardashian-Jenner Family Favorites, she revealed some tidbits about her culinary prowess—including the fact that she pulls out her red Hermès china when cooking Italian because it goes "with the red sauce." Most interesting, however, is her dedication to table settings. "Some people paint, others make music and dance, I make table settings," she says.
17 | Kim blow dries jewelry before putting it on.
ShutterstockIn a 2011 tweet, Kim admitted that she blow dries all her jewelry before putting it on because the feeling of cold jewelry gives her the chills.
18 | And she bought some of Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry for nearly $65,000.
Trinity Mirror / Mirrorpix / Alamy Stock PhotoElizabeth Taylor was undoubtedly a style icon, so it's no surprise that Kim would want something to remember the actress by after her death in 2011. And, as you might expect, those kind of mementos come with quite a hefty price tag. During a 2011 auction, Kim bought three jade bracelets previously owned by the late actress for a whopping $64,900!
19 | Kim only wears a bikini when it's overcast to hide her cellulite.
IMDB/Ryan Seacrest ProductionsDon't expect to catch Kim outside in a bikini while the sun's out! In a 2015 interview with Elle U.K., the reality star admitted to only wearing a bikini when it's overcast for a very specific reason.
"It’s a trick of the light," she said. "There are paparazzi everywhere, that’s a fact, so if I go out in bright sunlight all my cellulite will be lit up and visible. If it’s overcast, you can’t see it. I know it’s there, but you won’t."
20 | Kendall is named after Nicole Brown Simpson.
ShutterstockEveryone knows of the Kardashians' ties to O.J. Simpson after Kris' former husband, Robert Kardashian, defended Simpson during the notorious murder trial for Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. But Kris and Brown Simpson were actually so close themselves that Kris gave one of her daughters—Kendall Jenner—the middle name Nicole a year after she was killed.
21 | Kim sent out fake baby photos to test her friends.
ShutterstockIt's important to know who your real friends are—and Kim will go as far as she has to to find hers. When she and West had their first child together, North West, in 2013, TMZ reported that Kim sent out fake baby photos to about a half-dozen friends to see if they would try to sell them—and unsurprisingly, some did!
22 | Kris refuses to be called "grandma."
ShutterstockKris may have a total of 10 grandchildren now—but don't expect to catch any of them calling her "grandma." In 2013, she told People that she ditched the traditional moniker because she didn't like the way it sounded. Instead, her grandchildren call her "Lovey," a nickname inspired by one of her mother's friends.
23 | Kris and Kourtney used to own a store called Smooch.
ShutterstockThe Kardashian family has had their fair share of business ventures, especially in the fashion world—the most notable being their chain clothing boutique, Dash, of course.
However, before the Dash days, Kris and Kourtney actually paired up to run a children's boutique called Smooch. The store was open for six years before they decided to close its doors in 2009.
24 | Rob has his own line of socks.
Arthur GeorgeRob doesn't spend much time using the Kardashian name for fame. However, the family name did help him create one thing he's passionate about: socks. In 2012, Rob founded the sock company Arthur George, a combination of his and his father's middle names.
25 | Kourtney's sons share a birthday.
WENN Rights Ltd / Alamy Stock PhotoKourtney's two sons, Mason Disick and Reign Disick, may have been born five years apart, but they share the same birthday: December 14.
"It is still crazy to me that I have two boys born on the same exact day,” she shared in a 2015 blog post. “I really tried to not have it happen, so they could each have their day, but there was no way around it." What mom wouldn't love two-for-one birthday celebrations?
26 | Kim was on ecstasy during her first wedding.
ShutterstockNowadays, Kim is never far from her husband's side, and everyone remembers her infamous 72-day marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries, but did you know that Kim was actually married once before?
Yes, before West or Humphries, Kim married music producer Damon Thomas when she was just 19. The couple divorced four years later in 2004, and Kim later admitted on a 2018 episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians that she "got married [to Thomas] on ecstasy."
27 | And Khloe married Lamar Odom after only knowing him for 30 days.
ShutterstockKhloe only waited 30 days after meeting Lamar Odom to marry him. Their marriage and subsequent divorce was such a whirlwind that even Khloe later admitted to Oprah Winfrey that it was crazy to marry someone after such a short time.
28 | A Dancing with the Stars casting executive came up with the idea for Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Ryan Seacrest ProductionsIt's hard to remember a time before the Kardashian family took over our television screens, when in reality, their show only premiered in 2007. But how did it all come to be? In a 2017 Hollywood Reporter interview, Kris revealed it was the brainchild of their friend Deena Katz, a casting director for Dancing With the Stars.
"One night, Deena Katz came over for dinner and life was swirling around, and she said, 'This is a reality show—I think you should really talk to Ryan Seacrest.' So I did," Kris said.
29 | The show's original purpose was to drive business to the family's stores.
ShutterstockWhile Keeping Up with the Kardashians has certainly launched the Kardashian family into unchartered fame territory, that was not quite the original plan. In 2014, Kris admitted that she had originally intended to use the show as a way to drive business to the family's stores, Dash and Smooch. Both stores have since closed, but we don't think the Kardashian clan is necessarily complaining about the way things have turned out.
30 | Keeping Up with the Kardashians has had 10 spin-off shows.
Ryan Seacrest ProductionsSince the inception of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the family has produced a whopping 10 spin-off series: Kourtney and Kim Take Miami (which originally starred Khloe instead of Kim), Kourtney and Kim Take New York, Khloe & Lamar, Sex With Brody, Kourtney and Khloe Take The Hamptons, Dash Dolls, I Am Cait, Revenge Body With Khloe Kardashian, Rob & Chyna, and Life of Kylie.
31 | Khloe competed on Celebrity Apprentice.
YouTube/MGM TelevisionBefore all those spin-offs, Khloe did some reality television that didn't solely star her family. She starred on the eighth season of Donald Trump'sCelebrity Apprentice, where she was eliminated half-way into the season in 2009. During an episode of Chelsea Handler'sNetflix talk show in 2016, Khloe admitted that she hated every minute of the experience and only did the show because momager Kris made her.
32 | And Kim appeared on Dancing with the Stars.
IMDB/ABCKim was a contestant on the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars in 2008, partnered with dancing pro Mark Ballas. She didn't go far, unfortunately, and was eliminated after the second week of the competition. "This was a huge challenge for me," she told E! after getting the boot. "Every dance was a huge accomplishment for me, and I did the best I could."
33 | Kim's will includes instructions about her hair, nails, and makeup.
ShutterstockIt's no surprise that Kim enjoys having her hair, nails, and makeup done—after all, she's hardly photographed without being fully done up. But did you know that there's actually a clause in her will that specifies that her hair, nails, and makeup must be done to a T, no matter what? During a 2018 interview with Elle magazine, Kim said that even if she "is so out of it that she can't even communicate," she still expects to be camera-ready post-mortem.
