Dollar Tree was in the mistletoe spirit long before pumpkin spice season arrived. The discount retailer dropped its 2024 holiday collection back in September, giving savvy shoppers time to brainstorm tons of ideas for homemade Christmas decorations. Three words: Christmas tree collar. Many DIY experts have taken to TikTok to show off their budget-friendly crafts, specifically these three hacks.

Christmas tree skirts are useful in that they’re a fun, stylish way to conceal the not-so-pretty parts of a tree, like a clunky stand with obstructing screws. But if you want even more coverage, a Christmas tree collar might be for you—and they’re going to be all the festive rage this season, according to TikTok.
The decorative coverings have already been spotted at quiet luxury retailers like West Elm, Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and World Market and can cost anywhere from $70 to $150. But Dollar Tree shoppers are DIY-ing their own tree collars for less than $10.
Similar to a tree skirt, a collar slips around the base of your Christmas tree. However, its height does a better job of keeping the stand and trunk out of view. The decorative coverings come in all shapes and fabrics, but Dollar Tree shoppers are using laundry baskets and buckets as their base.
In a how-to video, TikToker Emma Villaneda (@thecraftedstudioco) demonstrated how she made her viral tree collar for just $1.25 using a bucket from Dollar Tree and some spray paint.
@thecraftedstudioco Sharing my most viral 🤯 Dollar Tree 🎄Christmas Tree Bucket HACK! 👉🏻 Would you use this DIY tree collar decorating hack?! ♥️💚♥️👇🏻 SHOPPING list: 🛒 Dollar Tree 4 Ft Christmas Tree 🛒 Dollar Tree Bucket w/ Handles 🛒 Dollar Tree Zip Ties *Optional* 🛒 Rustoleum Gold Spray Paint #dollartree #christmas #holidaydecor #holiday #diy #craft #homedecor #christmasdiy #outside #design #home #interior #homedesign #interiordesign #explorepage #trending #reelvideo #newreel #art #dollartree #dollarstore #kidcraft #creative #christmasdecorations #tutorial #hacks @Dollar Tree @Emma Villaneda
First, she took a pair of scissors to a medium-sized bucket and removed its handles before cutting out the bottom. Then, she sprayed the bucket with shimmery gold paint to give it a festive glow. And that’s it!
If you don’t already have a Christmas tree, Villaneda suggested picking up two of the four-foot artificial Christmas trees from Dollar Tree that retail for just $5 each. She likes zip-tying the pair together to create “a fluffier tree.”

“I think this hack would be so perfect for adding a Christmas tree into a classroom, an apartment, or dorm, or even just a smaller area in your home,” Villaneda said of her DIY creation.
Of course, you can also add whatever fabrics and decorative accessories you like. TikTok Olivia (@oliviasromantichome) made a winter wonderland-inspired tree collar using a laundry basket and white feather dusters, all of which she sourced from Dollar Tree for about $12.

Olivia also started by first cutting out the bottom of the basket. So she could later slip the collar around the tree, she then cut a slit on the side. Using a hot glue gun, she added white feather dusters (like what you would attach to the bottom of a Swiffer Sweeper) around the basket’s exterior, creating a snowy effect. Along the rim she glued a white fluffy scarf, but you could also cut a feather duster to fit.
And if you’re looking really in the mood for Christmas crafts this year, TikToker @nicksseasonaldecor says you can also make your own wreath.
He picked up a four-foot Christmas tree for just $5 at his local Dollar Tree and turned it into a giant-sized "holiday swag." The festive decoration was rounded out with faux berries and an eight-inch bow. Hang it on your front door for all your neighbors to see, or use it as a dramatic table centerpiece.
