Joe Jonas-Sophie Turner Divorce Story Doesn't Add Up, Fans Say

People are using social media to call out reports blaming the Game of Thrones star.

After four years of marriage and welcoming two children together, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and Jonas Brothers singer Joe Jonas are divorcing. They confirmed the news themselves on Sept. 6 by posting identical statements on Instagram, after much speculation about photos of the two celebrities sans their wedding bands and a few media reports that the split was in process. Their statement refers to "speculative narratives," some of which have painted Turner as hardcore partier and Jonas as the present parent. However, fans have been quick to produce evidence that this characterization of Turner is inaccurate and to posit that people close to Jonas have been placing negative stories to make her look bad. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, multiple publications reported that Jonas had filed for divorce from Turner in Florida and requested joint custody of their children, three-year-old Willa and a one-year-old daughter whose name has not been released.

TMZ reported that the couple had been having issues for six months, and that "a source with direct knowledge" said that the reason Jonas wants a divorce is because "she likes to party, he likes to stay at home. They have very different lifestyles."

The outlet also claimed that it's indicated in the filing that Jonas and Turner's kids have been living with him the past three months while he is on tour with the Jonas Brothers. Turner has recently been in London for work.

The former couple claim it was "a united decision."

Turner and Jonas posted the same statement to Instagram on Wednesday, Sept. 6, confirming that they are divorcing and claiming that it was a mutual decision.

"After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage," the statement reads. "There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."

Turner's last post before this was a gallery of her time at a New York City Jonas Brothers concert posted on Aug. 14 and including a shot of Jonas kissing her hand. On Sept. 4, after gossip began to spread about the stars being photographed without their wedding rings, Jonas posted a shot of himself in which the band is prominently featured. At the time, some fans believed he did this in order to dispel split rumors.

Fans think Turner is being unfairly blamed.

As reported by BuzzFeed, fans resurfaced an interview with Turner after TMZ published the report about the 27-year-old's alleged partying.

In 2020, around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Turner did a virtual interview with Conan O'Brien. She explained that lockdown was easier on her than Jonas, because she considers herself a homebody.

"I'm an introvert. I'm a homebody. I'm just like, if I could stay home all day I would, so this is great for me," the Dark Phoenix star said. "Joe's a real social butterfly, so I struggle to lock him down and have him just spend time with me. It's like prison for him, but it's great for me."

The Buzzfeed piece also notes that  Turner and Jonas had made a TikTok video in 2020 in which they answered questions about their relationship. In it, they both agreed that Turner is the partner who prefers to be at home.

Some are accusing Jonas of "throwing [Turner] under the bus."

Given Turner's "homebody" comments, the "source with direct knowledge" revealing Jonas' supposed reason for filing, and the filing noting that the children are with the singer, some fans have come to the conclusion that he and his team are purposely trying to make Turner look bad.

Neither of their official statement posts have the comments turned on, but the comment section on Jonas' Sept. 4 post is full of fans accusing him of this.

"This clown posting this picture with his wedding ring just before filling for divorce and publicly throwing Sophie under the bus," reads one comment. Someone else wrote, "The Sophie is a bad mom angle you're taking is not cool." Another commenter posted, "Wow – this is disappointing. How reasonable are you being if you are trying to make the mother of your children look bad?"

On Twitter someone wrote, "Joe Jonas' team saying that he's the homebody and sophie parties too much, but then a TikTok they made together resurfaced where they both agreed she was the homebody.. smh joe, the math isn't mathing."

Another tweet reads, "'Joe Jonas has been caring for his two children with Sophie Turner' oh you mean he was *checks notes* fulfilling his role as a father? Wild."

A new report involves a Ring camera.

Following the stars' official statements, TMZ published another report on Sept. 6 in which sources claimed to know more information about what led to the split. According to TMZ, "multiple sources who have direct contact with Joe" said that the singer decided to file for divorce after seeing Turner do or say something made him realize that their marriage was over on a Ring security camera. No further details were shared.
