The Most Negative Zodiac Sign, According to Astrologers

Whether you see the glass half full or half empty may be predetermined by astrology. Those who fall into the latter group are generally the more emotional and rigid zodiac signs. Sure, the bakery selling out of your favorite cake on your birthday is a bummer, but is it a reason to spend the rest of the day brooding? Is it worth crying over the coffee you just spilled on your shirt? For the pessimists among us, maybe so, as even such small nuisances can evoke anger or melancholy. Keep reading for our breakdown of the most negative zodiac signs from slightly stubborn to truly gloomy.

Tauruses are grounded earth signs who tend to be realists rather than pessimists, but it's their stubborn streak that can bring out the negativity, explains Marita Andreeva, resident astrologer for the Futurio app.

Even if they truly need a little assistance, Charlotte Kirsten, founder of the astrology blog Typically Topical, says these motivated self-starters will rarely ask for help. This makes them "come across as ultra-competitive."

Their bullheaded ways also make them fiercely resistant to change, looking at only the negative of a situation if it takes them out of their comfort zone.

Pisces may be the sweet romantic of the zodiac, but the tendency to have their head in the clouds, although at times endearing, can make them blow situations out of proportion. Kirsten says they're quick to internalize criticism and can unknowingly "take on a self-pity role," which makes them often see the glass half-full.

"As an emotional water sign, they tend to feel things deeply and may struggle with boundaries," adds Rachel Clare, an astrologer at Mysticsense. "They may also have a tendency to avoid confrontation and may struggle with decision-making."

Like Taurus, this sign does not do well with the unknown. "Virgos crave order, structure, and hierarchy, and though change can improve such systems, they're acutely aware of all the possible negative consequences and side effects—usually before they've even taken place," shares Kirsten.

Clare says their perfectionist ways can make them very reliable and hardworking but "can also make them nitpicky and overly critical of themselves and others." This may lead to anxiety and further negative thinking, as they struggle to relax.

Cancer is well known as the zodiac's most emotional sign. They are "highly empathic and nurturing towards others," says Clare. But being a water sign and ruled by the Moon, they're also prone to "moodiness, emotional reactivity, and insecurity," she adds.

As Kirsten puts it, "Cancers can't stop themselves from 'feeling all the feels,'" and so they often let their emotional instincts and worries influence their greater outlook on situations. This can be "great in circumstances that require empathy, but disastrous in others."

Ruled by Saturn, the planet of structure and discipline, Capricorn is best known as the zodiac's determined workaholic. "But they may also be seen as pessimistic, rigid, and unemotional," says Clare.

Their desire to stay the course means they "see risks and 'what ifs' around every corner," Kirsten points out. So, don't expect them to take part in any impromptu activities.

Also, don't expect them to be forthcoming with their true feelings. "Capricorns are generally restrained individuals who do not exhibit their emotions," says Andreeva. Instead, they may criticize and shut out those around them.

It was pretty unanimous that Scorpio is the most negative zodiac sign. Like Cancer and Pisces, they are a very emotional water sign. And like Capricorn, they keep these emotions bottled up. Because they're so skeptical of everyone, they "expect a dirty trick everywhere and have a slightly pessimistic look at the world," says Andreeva.

But their emotional intensity takes its worst turn when they feel wronged. "Scorpios are also very likely to hold grudges or become vindictive," adds Clare, who says they can "sometimes be seen as possessive, jealous, and controlling."
