With the year coming to a close, retailers across the U.S. are reevaluating their store portfolios. This month alone, CVS has shuttered six locations, including three MinuteClinics—that will make for roughly 300 store closures in 2024. And they aren’t the only ones struggling. Walgreens recently announced plans to close eight of its stores, which is part of the company’s 2025 initiative to shutter 500 locations. Department stores like Macy’s and Kohl's are facing similar problems as well.

Now, the grocery industry is being impacted. Supermarket chains like Walmart, Albertsons, and Stop & Shop are shutting down nationwide. See if your neighborhood grocer is closing up shop here.

Eighty-two Walmart employees in Huntsville, Alabama, will be without a job before the holidays. The big city is home to 10 Walmart locations, but the retail center at 4226 Northwest Oakwood Ave. will shutter its doors on Friday, Dec. 20, reports Supermarket News.

In a statement to Supermarket News, the company attributed the store closure to slow foot traffic and declining sales. “While our underlying business is strong, this store hasn’t performed as well as we had hoped,” said Walmart. The decision “was not made lightly and was reached only after a careful and thoughtful review process.”

Fortunately, all 82 store workers will have the option to transfer to nearby Walmart locations in the Huntsville metropolitan area. In the interim, Walmart Pharmacy staff is working overtime to ensure customers’ prescriptions are successfully transferred to another Walmart address.

One Albertsons store is shutting down in Roseburg, Oregon.

The city of Roseburg, Oregon is losing its one and only Albertsons location next year. The grocery store located at 3013 NW Stewart Parkway will indefinitely close on Feb. 7, 2025.

"This is a permanent closure," reads an alert received by Oregon's Office of Workforce Investments/Higher Education Coordinating Commission, per KVAL 13.

The closure affects 87 employees; news of available store transfers or a potential severance package has not been publicized.

A Safeway is shutting down in San Francisco “due to ongoing concerns about associate and customer safety, as well as persistent issues with theft,” explained the Albertsons-owned grocer in a statement to Mayor London Breed, obtained by The San Francisco Chronicle.

The store in question is located in San Francisco’s Fillmore neighborhood at 1335 Webster Street. Local residents have been coming to this Safeway for more than 40 years. It’s unclear when the grocer will cease operations, but it’s rumored to be around Feb. 7, 2025.

"We remain committed to serving San Francisco at our 15 remaining locations, and to ensure that our unionized workforce can perform their jobs in safe and secure working environments," Safeway said in the letter.

San Francisco’s retail businesses have been hit hard by a recent rise in shoplifting and other adjacent crimes. Earlier this week, it was revealed that multiple Walgreens locations would also be shuttering.

According to Fox Business, eight juvenile retail suspects have been arrested by the San Francisco Police Department in recent weeks.

Stop & Shop closed 32 locations across five states.

Stop & Shop has axed 32 locations from its roster as of November. In a press release, the Northeastern grocer said it would be shuttering “underperforming stores” to better the company’s financial health.

"Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” said Stop & Shop president Gordon Reid. "Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”
