Color personality tests are a fun and creative tool for exploring what makes you tick. Far from an exact science, these tests offer open-ended insights that can serve as a jumping-off point for your own self-reflection and analysis.

Bayu Prihandito, a certified life coach, psychology expert, and the founder of Life Architekture, says that taking a color personality test is like holding up a mirror to your inner self.

"By understanding the colors you resonate with, you can gain insights into your emotions and behaviors," he explains. "This self-awareness can lead to personal growth, better decision-making, and improved relationships. Plus, these tests are often designed to be fun, which makes it easy for someone to learn more about themselves."

Wondering what exactly a color personality test can do to improve your life? Read on to learn the top seven ways these tests can make you happier, according to mental health experts.

While it's certainly possible to over-analyze yourself into a depressive state, having a solid understanding of yourself is generally considered an important part of mental wellness, says a 2021 study published in the journal Frontiers in Digital Health.

"Accurate overall self-awareness benefits the development and well being of an individual," the study authors write.

Color personality tests can help to highlight your most pervasive traits, which may help raise your feelings of self-awareness, and subsequently your happiness.

"These tests aim to provide insights into your character, and even potential strengths and weaknesses. For example, someone drawn to blue might be perceived as calm and trustworthy, while red might indicate passion and energy," explains Prihandito.

2 | They can help you explore your current emotional state.

Your biggest personality traits may be somewhat fixed, but your emotional state is often more fluid. Taking a color personality test can help you better understand those emotions in real-time.

"Just as we might feel different emotions on different days, our color preferences can change based on our mood, experiences, or even the time of day," Prihandito explains. By taking color tests often, you may become more attuned to the ways your feelings fluctuate.

3 | Color tests can help you find clarity amid the chaos.

If you're looking for more clarity in your life, a color personality test can help you cut through the noise. The visual, intuitive nature of such a test can take the pressure off directly analyzing the facts of your life, and help you get in touch with a deeper sense of self.

"The act of introspection, guided by the colors, might help declutter mental chaos," says Michelle Landeros, LMFT, a licensed marriage and family therapist at Therapist Pages. "Finding out that you're drawn to specific colors and understanding why can bring moments of inspiration. It's like suddenly understanding why you've always preferred quiet mornings by the beach or why bustling city nights make your heart race."

4 | They can help you communicate your needs and desires.

It's difficult to communicate your needs and desires to others if you don't fully understand them yourself. By using color personality tests as a starting point, you may be better able to articulate the things that matter to you most.

In particular, several of the experts we spoke to recommended the Lüscher Color Test, which asks users to rank their color preferences out of eight colored cards.

"The order in which the colors are chosen is believed to provide insights into the individual's current emotional state and certain personality traits," explains Landeros. "Dr. Lüscher believed that color preferences were universal and not influenced by culture or upbringing, meaning that the same color preferences would indicate similar emotional states across different people."

5 | They can also help you better understand your loved ones.

Taking color personality tests with your loved ones can also be a great way to build mutual understanding.

"Color personality tests can improve interpersonal relationships by helping individuals understand and appreciate different personality types," says Nick Bach, PsyD, a psychologist and marriage counselor based in Louisville, KY. "By recognizing and respecting the diversity in personality styles, people can develop more harmonious and effective communication skills, leading to stronger connections and happier relationships."

In particular, it may be helpful to compare and contrast the results of the test with your preconceived perceptions. This can open up some deep conversations about your relational dynamics that far exceed the results of the test itself.

6 | Color tests can enhance self-esteem and confidence.

Knowing yourself well can empower you to take charge of your life. A color test can help get you there, regardless of whether or not you agree with its ultimate assessment. In fact, the test may be equally effective in promoting self-awareness regardless of whether the answer resonates with you or calls for rejection.

Ultimately, this increased awareness can help you develop a stronger sense of which qualities make you unique. "This self-awareness can enhance self-esteem and confidence, leading to increased happiness," says Bach.

Gaining a more intuitive understanding of yourself may also help give you clarity on tough decisions that affect your career, relationships, and more.

"Knowing one's color personality type can guide individuals in making choices and pursuing activities that align with their natural tendencies and preferences. By understanding their own needs and motivations better, individuals can make decisions that are more fulfilling and increase overall happiness," says Bach.

To make the most of these tests, Prihandito says you should approach them with an open mind. "They're tools for introspection, not absolute guides about who you are," he tells Best Life.
