The Most Popular Baby and Dogs Names Today Are Inspired by the Royals
Old-fashioned names are so in right now.
In keeping with the current trend of classic monikers, the most popular names for boys were Liam, Noah, William, James, Oliver, Benjamin, Elijah, Lucas, Mason, and Logan. For girls, Emma, Olivia, Ava, Isabella, Sophia, Charlotte, Mia, Amelia, Harper, and Evelyn topped the list. (And while many of these baby name rankings exist, the annual report by the SSA is considered one of the most official iterations, given that most people receive a social security card at birth.)
Of course, William is the name of the potential heir to the throne, Prince William, and Charlotte is the name of his only daughter, Princess Charlotte. We wouldn’t be surprised if the 2019 list sees an uptick in Archies now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have revealed the name of their new bundle of joy.
It’s interesting to note that the royal-inspired name trend extends beyond human babies as well. According to the pet-sitting and dog-walking website Rover.com, pawrents are also jumping on names inspired by the British royals.
“Both Harry and Meghan are both up year over year, 133 percent and 129 percent, respectively,” Josh Benjamin, a spokesperson for Rover.com, told Best Life. “The name Archie was trending up in 2018, it rose 26 percent from 2017. This follows the trend we’ve seen of people pulling inspiration from pop culture like Riverdale, as well as more interest in retro names. In 2018, old-timey dog names like Archie, Minnie, and Pearl were up 17 percent year over year—just like the trend for (human) kiddos.”
According to Rover, the most popular pet name for 2018 was Sophie, followed by George, Prince, and Charlotte (two of William’s children). Rover also reports that Archie was the sixth most popular orange cat name out of a list of 82. Again, that’s only sure to climb.
