The Story Behind This Viral Photo of a Dog With His Kittens Will Touch Your Heart
Meet Roger, the greatest foster dad.
Meet Roger. He's a six-year-old rescue who was adopted by Jacob Newby as a family dog in Christmas 2014. He's also, as it turns out, a natural-born foster father.
You see, in 2016, Jacob's family began fostering three rescue kittens, and Roger immediately took them all in as his own. "He always needed to be around them," Jacob told Best Life. "He would clean them, snuggle with them, and keep them safe from anything."
While the pup was an excellent pawrent to the entire litter, he developed a particular fondness for one of the cats, who they ended up naming Gene and giving him a forever home. "Roger loved Gene more than anything," Jacob said.
Then, tragedy struck. "Last November, Gene snuck outside and was attacked by pack of coyotes. Roger barked his heart out and almost broke down the dog door to get to him, but it was too late. After this, he was really sad and visibly depressed."
To cheer him up, the Newbys adopted Rudy, another rescue dog. But while the two became good friends, Rudy couldn't fill up the hole left by the loss of Roger's beloved cat son.
So, on Thursday, Jacob brought home a litter of five kittens who had been abandoned by their mother. Suddenly, Roger was a dad again.
"Roger loves [the kittens] very much, and takes even better care of them. I've never seen a dog really smile like he did [when we brought them home]."
Jacob snapped a photo of the elated doggy dad and posted it on Reddit, where it immediately went viral.
"That's love," one Reddit user commented. Indeed, it is. And for more heartwarming stories about puppy parents, read the Incredible Story of a Dog That Adopted Nine Ducklings.
