Fire, Earth, Air, and Water—What Your Zodiac Element Says About Your Love Life

See how these astrological factors contribute to your romantic pursuits.

You may already know a lot about your zodiac sign and why you behave a certain way. But did you know your zodiac element also plays a role in your personality—specifically how you approach love?

"On a basic level, we can examine how the four elements of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water interact astrologically to bring context and understanding around issues with love," says Lauren Perrault, psychic medium and spiritual counselor at Fresh Start Registry.

Each sign is associated with one of these elements and all of them have qualities that can be seen as benefits or drawbacks when it comes to romance and relationships. Keep reading to hear more from Perrault and other astrologers on what your zodiac element says about your love life.

Fire rules desire, passion, and vitality and is connected to Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.

"People with fire signs are all about action and showing affection by doing things for others," says Lauren DeGolia, clarity consultant and astrologer at Fresh Start Registry.

Jennifer Baptista, tarot card reader and spiritual realtor at Fresh Start Registry, tells Best Life that you can bet these people are coming in hot. They are very direct in going after what they want and their confidence draws people into their orbit.

While their straightforwardness can be good in certain situations, some people need time to warm up to that type of energy. However, DeGolia says partnering with a fire sign is a surefire way to infuse love, lust, and adventure into any relationship.

Earth

Earth signs are known for being grounded. They're people who love feeling safe and secure, and they'll bring that vibe to any of their relationships. Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo fall under this element, and they're great at making you feel comfortable during those early stages.

"They move slowly and like to take their time getting to know you," says Stina Garbis, astrologer and owner at Psychic Stina. But she notes that it could be a little longer before they are willing to open themselves up.

Perrault describes them as solid and reliable people who enjoy comfort and consistency. But it's important to know how their behavior shifts when they're out of balance. In these cases, "They can come across as critical, condescending, and rigid—which may not bode well for their love life," she says.

But they are patient with their lovers, and when it comes to commitment, they'll be in it for the long haul—sometimes longer than they should be. When you're with an Earth sign, you need to talk about both of your expectations, so that neither of you ends up hurt.

Air

Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius make up the Air signs, and they'll be excellent communicators in their relationships. "These elements like to talk things out, articulate what they need, and study new ways of being in relationships with other people," says DeGolia.

They tend to put their intellectual connection with someone above a physical one, and they like feeling seen by their partner. But it's not uncommon to see them dating without committing.

"Air signs are quick to fall in love but also fast to change their minds," says Garbis. "You may experience the beginning, middle, and end of the relationship during a single date."

You're guaranteed to have a good time with an air sign, and if you find yourself in a relationship with them, it'll be very hard to let them go.

Water

"Water signs are the deep feelers of the zodiac, empathic, and quite intuitive; but when out of balance, can be needy, jealous, and emotionally unstable," says Perrault. These are your Pisces, Cancers, and Scorpios—and they have quite a well of emotions.

Water signs are known for being clingy at times but also incredibly loyal. You can either get the ooey-gooey type of love from them or they'll freeze you out if you've hurt them in any way, Garbis tells Best Life.

"When in a relationship, a water sign is a good reader of needs and is usually highly attuned to their partner's emotional state," says DeGolia. Just be mindful that they'll need space now and then to be their best selves in the relationship.
