Model, actor, businesswoman, and activist Emily Ratajkowski just announced that she and husband Sebastian Bear-McClard are expecting their first child together. Unlike most celebrities, Ratajkowski didn't simply post about her pregnancy on social media or wait for tabloids to get ahold of the news—she opted to make her announcement with a bit more flair. With some help from Vogue, Ratajkowski released a pregnancy short film, written by her and directed by actor-director-writer Lena Dunham, to share the exciting news. To announce her pregnancy, Ratajkowski penned an essay for Vogue as their newest cover star. Along with sharing the news itself, the essay also explained why Ratajkowski and her husband don't want to know the gender of their child ("We won’t know the gender until our child is 18 and that they’ll let us know then"). Ratajkowski's friend, Award-winning director Dunham, also created a short film for Vogue to accompany the announcement, featuring curated moments of Ratajkowski's pregnancy thus far and voiceover of her wondering about the child she'll soon meet.
Rather than worrying about gender, Ratajkowski is much more excited to see who this little person will become. "The truth that we ultimately have no idea who—rather than what—is growing inside my belly. Who will this person be? What kind of person will we become parents to? How will they change our lives and who we are? This is a wondrous and terrifying concept, one that renders us both helpless and humbled," writes Ratajkowski.
A little over a month ago, Ratajkowski made her professional foray into writing. On Sept. 15, she published her first personal essay on The Cut from her forthcoming collection. A month later, she officially announced that her deal with Macmillan Publishers had been finalized (her book of essays, titled My Body, is on the horizon). With her most recent announcement that she is expecting, Ratajkowski is on the precipice of some major life changes.
