Just a few weeks ago, late night talk-show host Conan O'Brien was making a joke about President Donald Trump's latest scandal, and how analysts were predicting that it "could be the beginning of the end for Donald Trump." He thought about this for a second and then corrected himself. "Oh wait, I'm sorry," he said, "This joke is from a monologue I did last year."
It's funny because it's true. Not that O'Brien is recycling jokes, but that we've been hearing about Trump's "beginning of the end" for so long that it's become almost a bigger journalism trope than "the Steve Jobs of… [insert non-computer industry here]," or a newspaper headline riffing on some variation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or There Will Be Blood. O'Brien wasn't quite right when he pegged that dire warning about Trump's demise being from 2016. You could go back as far as the summer of 2015 and find more than a few writers and political analysts claiming that the timer on Trump's imminent downfall had officially begun…. now.
