Walmart Is Getting Rid of This Starting Friday

It's good news for certain Walmart shoppers.

If you want to get your items from Walmart as soon as possible, you no longer have to spend a ton of money to do it. The company announced this week that beginning on Friday, Dec. 4, Walmart+ will be dropping its $35 order minimum for free one- or two-day shipping. Now, Walmart+ members will receive free speedy shipping no matter how much the contents of their cart come to. The move is also a boon to consumers who don't feel comfortable shopping in-store during the pandemic (despite Walmart's safety protocols), but don't want to have to spend a set amount just to get a few items delivered quickly.

"No other membership allows customers across the country to get everything from gingerbread cookies and eggnog to holiday decorations and toys delivered for free as soon as the same day," Walmart's Chief Customer Officer Janey Whiteside said in a statement. "Walmart+ is designed to make life easier—giving customers an option to not have to sacrifice on cost or convenience."

However, there are some restrictions around Walmart+'s new offering. "Delivery from Walmart stores on items like groceries will still carry a $35 minimum," the company's press release reads.

The move is the latest in the battle between the nation's two biggest retailers, Walmart and Amazon, with Walmart+ being the brick-and-mortar retailer's answer to Amazon Prime. This quick shipping with no minimum order has been one of Amazon Prime's key selling points since its introduction in 2007. Walmart's competing service only launched in Sept. 2020, but the $35 minimum order was the obvious drawback when comparing the two—until now, that is.
