Dog owners should double check what’s going into their furry best friend’s bowl this week. A leading dog food manufacturer announced that safety testing had unearthed bacteria in a batch of their product, leading to a new dog food recall. The chow in question has been contaminated with salmonella and should not be fed to your dog. In fact, it could even cause you danger, too. Read on for details, and for another recent recall that could affect you and your family, check out If You Bought This From Amazon, Stop Using It Immediately.
The company in question is Albright’s Raw Dog Food, based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Albright's has issued a recall on 67 cases of its popular dog food, Chicken Recipe for Dogs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advise that “pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
At the time of Albright's dog food recall on Nov. 13, one case of animal illness traced to the food has been reported. According to the FDA, "salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products."
The affected batches of Albright's food were distributed between Jul. 8 and Aug. 27 in California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, and sold via stores, mail order, and direct delivery. The possible salmonella contamination has only been identified in Albright's Chicken Recipe variety, packaged in two-pound rolls and labeled as “Lot number C000185, Best By 19 May 2021.
According to the FDA, pet owners who have any of the affected batches of food should stop feeding it to their dogs immediately and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund. You can also contact Albright's at 1-260-422-9440 (Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET).
