Meet the New Millennial Engagement Craze: The Avocado Proposal

Yes, this is really happening.

Oftentimes, it's hard to tell how a bizarre social media trend first came to be. Why, for example, did a bunch of celebrities start taking glamorous pasta selfies last fall? How did one attractive photo amid faux flowers inspire thousands of teens to flock to arts and crafts stores? What was the actual point of the #KyloRenChallenge?

It's not hard to guess the inspiration behind the newest social media trend, however: cutting a ripe avocado in half, sticking a diamond ring in there, and then using it to propose marriage to your significant other. Avocados are all the rage among millennials, most of whom are now entering prime marrying years, so to some extent this was an inevitable, if somewhat groan-worthy, trend. So read on to learn everything you need to know about one of the weirdest couples trends since the crazy-creative gender reveal. And if you'd prefer to eat your avocados the old-fashioned way, here's some good news for you: It's one of the best ways to lose 20 pounds fast.

1 | It requires a good, ripe avocado

If you're using an avocado to propose, that thing better be ripe, because no one is going to say yes to a ring they have to scoop out of the putrid, brownish gunk of rotting avocado. Speaking of the trend, one girl wrote on Twitter, "I love it but if it wasn't ripe though it would be a solid "no."' As any avocado lover knows, picking a perfectly ripe avocado is no easy task, and it might be even harder than picking the ring.

2 | Apparently it's best done on a beach

You still need to get down on one knee in a romantic setting, and, judging from the photos on social, a beach is the preferred location. Remember, however, that, unlike with a box, you've got a limited amount of time to make your move once you've picked out the perfect avocado, so it's gotta be fast!

This photo comes courtesy of  Taylor Shelby, a California woman whose now-husband, Ben Stevenson made what seems to be one of the very first #avocadoproposals. "I couldn't help but share the BEST and most creative proposal/best day of my life," she wrote in the caption.

3 | The trend is eliciting mixed reactions

Apparently, photographer Kim Tyler was walking along the beach when she saw a man proposing to his girlfriend with an avocado while she was, coincidentally, eating another avocado. Tyler put the photo up on Twitter, where some people were very into it, and others very much not. "OMG I didn't even know that's what I wanted and now I MUST get proposed to just for this," one girl wrote.  "Not sure this is a good idea. Avos go brown fast could be a bad symbol for the marriage," another girl commented.

4 | Yes, you can get customized avocados

If you want to get in on the trend but don't want to stick an expensive ring into a bunch of mush, there's a company called Custom Avocados that prints memos and logos on fruit that can stamp a tailor-made message on one of these bad boys for you. "We printed a series of memos followed by 'will you marry me?' on avocados for a couple in New York.  they wrote. Some people might think it's odd, but, ultimately, any expression of love is beautiful, so do whatever works for you!
