David Arquette Has an Apology for His Daughter With Courteney Cox

Divorces are hard for everyone involved, a reality that actor David Arquette is still coming to terms with. Even though it's been years, the actor said he still wants to apologize to his 16-year-old daughter, Coco Arquette, for putting her through one. Arquette and fellow actor Courteney Cox separated in 2010, when Coco was six years old, after being married for 11 years.

Arquette shared his feelings about Coco and the divorce in a Q&A with The Guardian, published on Jan. 23, in which he answered a series of short questions. When it came to the question, "To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?" Arquette replied, "My daughter, Coco, because divorce is so difficult."

Cox and Arquette met on the set of the 1996 movie Scream. When they married in 1999, she was 35 and he was 28, and apparently, age played a role in their relationship. In an interview with Howard Stern in 2010, the year he and Cox separated, Arquette said that his wife was tired of feeling like his mother. "She says that to me: 'I don't wanna be your mother anymore.' I appreciated that. I respected that. I've been going to therapy. I'm trying to grow up," Arquette said at the time (via People). He continued, "She's the greatest woman I've ever met. Now, yes, she's got her issues. She tries to take on everybody's problem. She tries to be the mother to everyone—that's why she doesn't want to be the mother to me anymore."

In the years since their split, Arquette and Cox have worked together to co-parent Coco and to get their relationship to a positive place. "We're co-parents to our daughter who's 16 so we have a really great relationship," Arquette told Yahoo! in a 2020 interview. "We're friends, and we've communicated a lot because of Coco."

When she appeared on Running Wild With Bear Grylls in 2016, Cox spoke out about their relationship. "We found ourselves leading separate lives and just coexisting and being great friends, but not having the intimacy that… is so important in a relationship," she said (via E! News). She continued, "I mean, as divorces go, I would say it's one of the better ones. For sure. We're good co-parents together."

"She's amazing," Arquette told Yahoo! in 2018. "She's so incredible. I just saw her in a new play she did after school. She sang and she's just so confident."ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb

Arquette and Cox both share moments with their daughter on social media. Cox has posted videos of herself playing piano while Coco sings, getting her makeup done by Coco, and of them trying a TikTok dance together. In 2018, Arquette shared an Instagram of himself and Cox with Coco. He captioned the photo, "I'm so proud of my daughter Coco! Have fun and be safe in Highschool! AND don't grow up too fast! I love love love you!!!"

Since 2015, Arquette has been married to producer and former Entertainment Tonight host Christina McLarty. They have two children together, Augustus and Charlie. As for Cox, she has been in a relationship with Snow Patrol band member Johnny McDaid since 2013. They got engaged in 2014, split in 2015, and then got back together, but have yet to marry.
