John Legend Passed Down His Sexiest Man Alive Title in the Most Hilarious Way

The artist congratulated Creed star Michael B. Jordan on starting his reign.

On November 18, People announced the magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2020: Michael B. Jordan, star of Black PantherJust Mercy, and the Creed series. And it didn't take long for the outgoing Sexiest Man Alive to officially and benevolently bequeath his title. Musician John Legend covered the annual issue in 2019, and he had nothing but praise for Jordan taking on the mantle—praise, and a sense of relief. On Twitter, John Legend congratulated Michael B. Jordan on taking Sexiest Man Alive, and he did it with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor. "Congratulations to my brother Michael B!" Legend tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. "And thank you! I can now keep gaining this quarantine weight in peace without the pressure of a title to maintain."

Back in September, People asked Legend if he had any preference as to who should wear the crown after him. The singer demurred from backing anyone in particular, but did say that Twitter users who weren't happy with him being announced had plenty of opinions.

"Going by my Twitter mentions when I was named of who people said should have been picked over me, I got a lot of Jason Momoa," Legend remembered, "That's the one person that stood out in the Twitter feedback."

The "All of Me" artist seemed to take that backlash with a grain of salt, just as he does the title. "I've truly enjoyed just making fun of myself throughout it because you can't take yourself too seriously when someone calls you the Sexiest Man Alive," Legend told People. "It's not a literal thing, and it's not to be taken too seriously."

And Jordan seems to be looking at the honor in the same way. In his cover story, he said that it stands out among his other accomplishments mainly because of the women in his family.

"When my grandmother was alive, [the issue] was something that she collected, and then my mom naturally reads it a lot and my aunts as well," the actor said. "This is one that they're definitely going to have a special place for."

The late night host was technically the first to congratulate the newly crowned star, since Jordan appeared on his Nov. 17 show for the big reveal. After viewers virtually rang in to place their guesses and one got it right, Jordan removed the helmet of the hazmat suit obscuring his identity and he was handed his trophy: a mirror.
