New Survey Reveals Nearly Half of Americans Don't Change Their Underwear Daily
But wait until you hear how many people wear the same pair for a week.
Have you ever run out of underwear on a trip or just thought to yourself, "This pair is still pretty clean, I'll rewear it?" Well, prepare to be justified—or disgusted—because a recent survey of 2,000 Americans revealed how often your fellow citizens are really changing their underwear, and the short of it is: not often at all.
According to an August survey from the intimates brand Tommy John, 45 percent of Americans have worn the same pair of underwear two or more days in a row, though men were much more likely to keep on the same pair than women were. In fact, 20 percent of men reported wearing the same pair of underwear for a week at a time. (Yes, you read that right: a whole week in the same pair of underwear!) Only 8 percent of women said the same.
Any doctor will tell you that this is a surefire way to get an infection. As Melissa Goist, MD, an OB/GYN at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explained to Health, "Underwear can trap moisture and [bacteria and yeast] love to multiply in a warm and wet environment."
The Tommy John study also revealed that 38 percent of Americans don't know how long they've had their oldest pair of underwear, which is another source of concern, considering that Health Status reports that underwear kept over a year has a greater chance of causing urinary tract infections and other diseases. After all, Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona who has done extensive research on germs, told ABC News, "If you wash a load of just underwear, there will be about 100 million E. coli in the wash water." Pretty gross, huh?
With all that in mind, experts say you should be replacing your undergarments every six months to a year. Though it may seem like no big deal to rewear and keep something on that isn't exposed to the outside world, when your health is compromised as a result, it's time to make a swap.
