Arnold Schwarzenegger's Advice to Man with Depression Will Make You Smile

An anonymous internet commenter sought motivation from Schwarzenegger in 2018—and he did not disappoint.

Arnold Schwarzenegger spent decades being the quintessential tough guy. But in recent years, he's become a beloved figure in many pockets of the internet, largely due to his unique mix of humor, sweetness, and a healthy dose of not taking himself too seriously. And no moment encapsulates that second quality more than a particular moment on Reddit in 2018. While participating in an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A, a Redditor with depression submitted a request for motivation from the body builder turned movie star turned politician.

"I know this is pandering but, I've been depressed for months and haven't hit the gym during that time," the commenter wrote. "Mr. Schwarzenegger, can you please tell me to get off my lazy *** and hit the gym? I swear to everything I hold dear that I will snap out of it and go."

One might read that specific request and expect the former governor of California to respond in kind, playing up the hard-shelled Terminator persona that brought him fame and fortune. But Schwarzenegger took an entirely different, and much sweeter tone in his reply—one that's likely to bring a genuine smile to your face.

"I'm not going to be that hard on you," he wrote. "Please don't be that hard on yourself."

"We all go through challenges, we all go through failure," he continued, adding that "sometimes life is a workout. But the key thing is you get up. Just move a little. Roll out of bed and do some pushups or go for a walk. Just do something. One step at a time."

Schwarzenegger wrapped up his motivational speech by telling the man with depression: "I hope you feel better and get back to the gym. But don't beat yourself up, because that's just useless talk. It doesn't get you closer to the gym."

"And," he concluded, "don't be afraid to ask for help. Good luck."

The Redditor responded and said:

I'm not kidding, I just jumped out of bed when I received this notification. Arnold, thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to reply.

I'm getting dressed and heading to the gym, I'll be doing a 5×5 routine (squats, overhead press, deadlift) to get the rust off and will snap out of it.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!💪♥

I wish everybody reading this comment could know how good it feels to have Arnold Schwarzenegger personally give you encouragement, I feel overwhelmed (in a good way) and as cliché as it sounds, I do have tears of joy in my eyes.

But it doesn't end there. The next day, on a Saturday no less, Schwarzenegger replied: "I'm proud of you! How did it go?"

After sharing some details of his workout, the Redditor said he'd be sure to pay it forward. "After your motivational message, my mood was uplifted," he wrote. "I did my best to spread that positive energy to everyone around me."
