Demi Moore Said Ashton Kutcher Used Their Sex Life to "Justify" His Cheating

The actor wrote that she had agreed to threesomes before her then-husband was unfaithful.

When Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher split in 2011, it was a dramatic end to their six-year marriage. But, fans wouldn't know the details of their breakup and what caused it until the actors spoke out years later. In her 2019 memoir Inside Out, Moore addressed the reasons publicly for the first time. She claimed that Kutcher cheated on her twice and attempted to use their own sex life to justify being unfaithful.

The Ghost star wrote that she agreed to inviting a third person into their bedroom on a few occasions to prove to him that she was "fun," something she later realized was a "mistake." Moore said that Kutcher used these experiences to "blur the line" of their otherwise monogamous relationship.

In Inside Out, Moore wrote (via People) that she "went into contortions to try to fit the mold of the woman [Kutcher] wanted his wife to be."

She continued, "I put him first. So when he expressed his fantasy of bringing a third person into our bed, I didn't say no. I wanted to show him how great and fun I could be."

Moore said that agreeing to threesomes was a "mistake" on her part and that she felt "shame" over it. She wrote, "They were good people, but it was still a mistake. I was strangely flooded with shame, I couldn't shake the feeling that this whole thing was somehow my fault."

She said he used their sex life as an excuse.

Moore claimed that Kutcher cheated on her twice, including while she was away filming the 2011 movie Another Happy Day. She explained in her memoir that he tried to use their sex life as an excuse for his infidelity.

"Because we had brought in a third party into our relationship, Ashton said, that blurred the lines and, to some extent, justified what he's done," the Ghost star wrote.

Moore wrote that she knew woman who claimed she'd been with Kutcher "wasn't lying" and that Kutcher "admitted it right away" after being confronted.

As reported by E! News, Moore also revealed in her memoir that she started drinking again when she was with the That '70s Show star, despite having been sober for nearly 20 years. During an episode of Red Table Talk that also featured two of her three daughters, Rumer and Tallulah Willis, Moore explained that she went back to alcohol for similar reasons to why she agreed to having threesomes.

"I made my own story up, that he wanted somebody that he could have wine with and do stuff," Demi said. "He's not the cause of why I opened that door. I wanted to be something other than who I am. It was literally like giving my power away."

Moore also opened up about suffering a miscarriage well into a pregnancy and how that impacted their relationship. "I ended up pregnant, and then I lost the baby at almost six months," she said. "And so, when I couldn't get pregnant again, the guilt that I felt… that it was clearly my fault, was just enormous."

Kutcher said their split made him feel like a "failure."

In a January 2023 interview with Esquire, Kutcher said that he remembered being at events and overhearing people gossiping about his breakup with Moore.

"Nothing makes you feel like a failure like divorce," the Your Place or Mine star said. "Divorce feels like a wholesale [expletive] failure. You failed at marriage." But he indicated that he was carrying on with his life, stating, "You own the [expletive] you did wrong, and you go forward."

Kutcher also said that his now-wife Mila Kunis called him out for his behavior after his split from Moore. Kunis and Kutcher co-starred on That '70s Show beginning in the late '90s, and they became friends. Their relationship became romantic in 2012, and they now have two children together.

Kutcher told Esquire that Kunis told him, "You were an [expletive]." He said, "Was I…?" and she responded, "Yeah, you were an [expletive] for a good two years."

Moore and Kutcher released statements announcing their breakup in 2011. At the time, there were already rumors circulating that Kutcher had cheated with two women. This, combined with what Moore has since revealed, makes her statement read more pointedly.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," she wrote in a statement published by People. "As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."

As for Kutcher, he said at the time, "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail."
