31 Worst American Cities for Staying Monogamous

If you haven't cheated on your spouse, sadly, you're in the minority. In a recent study from Trustify, 55 percent of male respondents said they cheated on their spouse with five or more people, and 50 percent of female respondents admitted to cheating with one person. And those are just the people who admitted to it.

Of course, nothing can make someone cheat, but there are certain factors that can tempt a person to stray from their monogamous relationship—and those factors run rampant in many U.S. cities. The more nightlife there is, and the more single or divorced friends someone has, for example, that often contributes to their decision to cheat.

In order to find out which cities make it hardest to stay monogamous, we calculated something that we've dubbed the Infidelity Factor for major U.S. cities. Collecting data from the U.S. Census Bureau, we noted a city's total population in addition to the percent of the population that was divorced, separated, and the number of bars per 100,000 people. Then, we averaged those numbers together. (Note: Not all data was available for all cities.)

Then, we consulted Ashley Madison, the notorious dating site for married people. Specifically, we looked at their list of the top 20 cities in the U.S. with the most sign-ups. If a city appeared on that list, the number away it was from getting knocked off the list was added to the aforementioned average. So, if a city had 12 percent of its population divorced, 3 percent separated, and 17 bars per 100,000 people, that'd be a 10.7 average. If it then appeared as No. 16 on Ashley Madison's list, we added 5 to the average, giving it an Infidelity Factor of 15.7.

It's a lot of math, but what it boils down to is that someone who's vulnerable to temptation is likely to make a poor (e.g. unfaithful) choice if they're living in a city with a higher Infidelity Factor. So keep reading to find out whether or not your current place of residence made the list of the 31 worst cities for staying monogamous.
