This Is What Wave of the COVID Pandemic Your State Is In

You might be surprised to know where your state stands with COVID.

Are we still in the first wave? Or is this the second wave? Will a third wave hit soon? These are all questions that have been tossed around throughout the last few months of the coronavirus pandemic. The trouble is, there never seems to be a solid answer. In the United States, it was especially difficult because the virus hit different parts of the country at different times. But now, thanks to a group of mathematicians who developed an algorithm to identify what wave of the COVID pandemic each state is in, we have some clarity.

In a study published on Sept. 22 in the journal Chaos, the authors took data collected in the seven-month period from Jan. 21 to July 31, 2020 and ran it through an algorithm that "selects a set of turning points for each state, computes distances between them, and determines whether each state is in (or over) a first or second surge." A "turning point" is when a declining curve of cases spikes upward or a curve that is rising suddenly turns downward.

Based on these findings, the researchers were able to determine that 31 states are in a second wave of the pandemic, 13 are still in the first wave, and a handful of other states either have either flattened the curve of the first wave, fully completed the second wave, or are coming off the first wave. Read on to find out what wave of the COVID pandemic your state is in—as well as the latest average of new cases per day (based on The New York Times data collected for the period ending on Sept. 23).
