Meet the Richest Zip Code in America
Fun fact: You need a boat to get there.
We’ve all come to associate 90210 with wealth and opulence, but, as it turns out, Beverly Hills is by no means the holder of the richest zip code in America. Nor is Palm Beach, New York’s Upper East Side, or some super-wealthy enclave of oil-rich Houston, either.
According to Bloomberg, which recently looked at the IRS data for zip codes with more than 200 tax returns as of the 2015 filing season (and with 500 residential households according to the latest Census tally), the richest zip code in the U.S. goes to 33109.
This is the coveted code of Fisher Island, a 216-acre floating paradise located just off of the coast of Miami Beach, Florida.
Accessible only by ferry, water taxi, or your own private sailboat, the sunny haven provides true isolation from the outside world to its elite residents.
And boy are they elite. While the island has over 50 different nationalities and a diverse body of professions ranging from supermodel to professional athlete to CEO, all of its inhabitants are one-percenters. According to a Bloomberg analysis of 2015 Internal Revenue Service data, the average income of the people who live there is $2.5 million.
According to Zillow, properties currently for sale in the area start at $500,000 for a one-bedroom condo and go up to almost $20 million for a sprawling mansion complete with 5 bedrooms and an ocean view. The private island also has a variety of hotels, like the luxurious Fisher Island Club, where rates go at about $1,000 a night.
Unsurprisingly, some of the other richest zip codes in America went to coastal areas in Florida, New York, and California (though 90210 didn’t even make it into the top 20). Some of the other richest zip codes include 94027 in Atherton, California, 33480 in Palm Beach, Florida, and 94301 in Palo Alto, California.
