If you think that a glass of Macallan at your neighborhood whiskey joint is expensive, wait until you see the price tag on the bottle of scotch that was auctioned off by Bonhams in Edinburgh this week.

Sold for £848,000 ($1.1 million), this bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 is officially the most expensive whiskey in the world. The title was previously held by another bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926, which was sold earlier this year for a close-but-no-cigar £814,081.

Known as the “Holy Grail of Whiskey,” this Macallan is worth its weight in gold for a number of reasons.

First: it’s extremely rare. Only 12 bottles of it were ever produced, and it’s unclear how many of them still exist in the world. Second: it’s a true vintage, having been distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986.

But what makes it especially unique is its artwork. Back in the day, the company commissioned the renowned pop artists Valerio Adami and Peter Blake to design the labels for the limited, exclusive collection.

Twelve of the bottles were illustrated by Blake, while the other twelve were done by Adami.

Since Adami is an Italian painter who is still revered for his highly stylized pieces, the bottle’s label is quite literally a priceless work of art. Unfortunately, this probably means you’d rather keep the bottle in a glass case and mount it over your fireplace than sip it on a special occasion, which many people believe sort of defeats the purpose of whiskey.

“At 34,000 dollars a shot someone is going to have to explain what it feels like to drink the price equivalent of a luxury sedan and still not have a buzz,” musician Joe Bonamassa wrote on Twitter.

“I hardly imagine this 60 year-old bottle of Macallan will be opened, not for £848,000 it won’t. It’s essentially art for display. It’s whisky as art,” journalist Lotta Haegg wrote.

As art goes, however, you could do a lot worse than this one. And for more on luxurious living, read up on The Most Top-Rated Restaurant in the World.
