The One Home Maintenance Task You Should Be Doing Every Summer
Tackling those gutter problems now will keep your home safer all year long.
With warmer weather rolling in and many people still spending more time at home than ever before, there's never been a better time to tackle those outdoor home maintenance projects that have been on your to-do list for what seems like an eternity. And while you may be eager to replant your garden or work on getting your lawn looking just right, there's one summer home maintenance task you can't wait any longer to complete: cleaning your gutters.
"Clearing your gutters and removing any debris and leaves ensure that your gutters are unblocked," explains Kimball Strickland, owner and president of Kimball Roofing & Repairs in Salt Lake City. "Gutter blockages can lead to various roofing problems such as drainage system issues and roof leaks."
By clearing out your gutters during the summer, Strickland says that you'll be better prepared for summer storms, which can cause gutters to sag due to water weighing down existing leaves or dirt that have built up. Tackling this task now also will help you avoid similar problems associated with leaf or snow buildup in the colder months, she says.
While you're at it, Strickland also recommends doing a thorough inspection of your roof, repairing any missing or loose shingles, as well as trimming any potentially hazardous tree branches.
"In the winter, excess snow and ice increase the weight on these branches and can make them break and fall," says Strickland. She also notes that removing branches in the early part of the summer, when vegetation is typically dry and less prone to breaking, is easier and can help prevent future damage.
