This State Is Doing the Least to Protect Against COVID Right Now

Cases are on the rise in the U.S., but restrictions remain lax in certain areas.

In the past week, the United States has seen an average of 44,280 new cases of COVID-19 per day, an increase of about 6 percent from the average two weeks prior, according to Oct. 5 data from The New York Times. And with the recent uptick in new cases, many states are taking measures to reverse the trend by reinstating previously lifted lockdown restrictions and even closing businesses and schools for the time being. Others, however, remain relatively lax in terms of their COVID restrictions, as well as how diligently they enforce the ones they do have in place.

Using a multi-source data set, personal-finance site WalletHub was able to determine the states with the fewest coronavirus restrictions. The data set compares all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 17 key metrics—ranging from whether restaurants are open to whether the state requires face masks in public and workplace temperature screenings. Each of the 17 metrics was graded on a 100-point scale, and the state was given an overall score with 100 representing the fewest restrictions. (For a full explanation of the metrics and methodology behind the survey, visit WalletHub). Read on to discover the 10 states with the fewest restrictions.
