This Is the U.S. State with the Most Christmas Spirit

New York? Ohio? Alaska? Not so fast!

Leavenworth, Washington

If you love Christmas, there's nothing better than celebrating it in an area in which your neighbors are just as eager to put up their trees and hang up their wreaths as you are. But, according to a new study by Century Link, some American locales have significantly more Christmas spirit than others.

To determine which American states had the most "Christmas spirit," the high-speed Internet service analyzed the number of Christmas tree farms per capita, the rate of charitable giving, and the frequency of tweets about Christmas. They also looked at the number of Google searches for Christmas movies and gingerbread houses, as well as the Google shopping trends for wrapping paper, Christmas cards, Christmas ornaments, and "Elf on a Shelf."

As one might expect, the states with the lowest Christmas spirit were the ones least likely to experience a white Christmas, like Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, California, and New Mexico. Although, surprisingly, Alaska had the lowest ranking, despite the fact that it's a winter wonderland.

Many of the states that were found to have the most Christmas spirit were those that were featured in popular Christmas films, like Ohio (#20), where the house from A Christmas Story is open for visitors. Though, by that logic, it's also a bit surprising that New York ranked so low (#34), given that it's the setting for beloved classics like Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Miracle on 34th Street, and It's a Wonderful Life.

Utah made the top three, no doubt because it's a haven for ski resorts where you can curl up by the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa after a long day on the slopes.

But the state that came in first overall was Washington, perhaps in part thanks to Leavenworth—a Bavarian-inspired village in the Cascade Mountains that brings every Christmas fantasy to life during its annual Winter Festival.

So congrats, Washington! You're the single most Christmasy place to spend Christmas. Just go easy on the egg-nog this year! And for more places near you where the Christmas fire burns bright, don't miss this delightful roundup of the 23 Most Magical Christmas Towns in America!
