Move over, Anna Wintour, there’s royalty in the house.

Queen Elizabeth made a surprise visit to London Fashion Week today and was seated (on a special blue velvet cushion atop her Philippe Starck ghost chair) beside the editor of Vogue in the front row (where else?) at a fashion show from emerging British designer Richard Quinn.

Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council (BFC) addressed the audience from the runway, saying: “Your Majesty, it is a true honor to have you here and to have your support for British fashion.”

The Queen’s appearance at the seasonal event was the first time she attended London Fashion Week—but she wasn’t there just to review Quinn’s bold prints and head scarves which, coincidentally, appeared to mirror the Queen’s own colorful style. She was there to present Quinn with the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.

Quinn is known for his striking prints and his collaboration with the Liberty and a London studio, which helps emerging artists and designers with printing services, workshops, and practical support to build their own collections.

The Queen wore a matching robin’s egg blue tweed dress and matching jacket embellished with Swarovski crystals for her first foray mixing it up with the fashion crowd. The ensemble was designed by Angela Kelly, her longtime personal dresser.

The award, created by Kelly on the request of Her Majesty, will be handed annually to an emerging British fashion designer who shows exceptional talent and originality, while demonstrating value to the community and/or strong sustainable policies, according to the British Fashion Council.

The Queen visited LFW’s Designer Showrooms to view the collections and then attended Quinn’s runway show before presenting him with the award. And for more royal coverage, don’t miss The One Thing Kate Middleton Has Learned from Meghan Markle.
