The Optical Illusion on This Missing Cat Poster Is Creeping Everyone Out
It's like something out of Harry Potter!
Most of the time, optical illusions inspire a feeling of awe and humility, as you realize just how flawed human perception is and how easy it is to trick our minds. Viral optical illusions like this woman's bizarre mirror selfie or this Japanese artist's crazy 3-D drawings generally elicit a "wow" from their viewers. But the following optical illusion may very well send a shiver down your spine.
On June 12, YouTuber Max Tiseyko filmed a video of a "missing cat" sign posted onto a shed. It seems like a fairly normal sign, until he gets up close, and the cat in the photo moves its head from left to right like magic. "Probably escaped from Azkaban or something," Tiseyko wrote in the caption to the video, which has been viewed over a million times.
Don't worry, though, there's nothing supernatural at play. This is actually a pretty common optical illusion, one used in haunted houses to make it seem as though paintings are following you wherever you go. When the eyes of a flat photo are placed on a concave, it gives the illusion that the eyes are following you wherever you go. Granted, in this case, it was probably done by accident by someone hastily taping the photocopy to the grooves of the shed, but it clearly worked really well nonetheless.
