Meredith Vieira Says This Celebrity Was Her Worst Interview Ever

"I think that he just found me annoying, and I've never seen him since"

From being the original moderator of The View when it premiered in 1997, to her five years of hosting Today, Meredith Vieira has spent over two decades interviewing celebrities on TV. Out of all of her one-on-one conversations, there is a particular experience with a legendary actor that Vieira still vividly remembers for not the best reasons. Vieira's worst interview happened at the most star-studded event of the year.

When former Access Hollywood correspondent Maria Menounos was a guest on The Meredith Vieira Show in January 2015, the host asked her which celebrity was her worst red carpet interview ever. And while Menounos wouldn't spill on that topic, Vieira herself didn't hesitate to do so.

"I was hosting the red carpet for the Oscars one year," Vieira said. (It was the 72ndAcademy Awards in 2000.) "It didn't happen right on the red carpet, but in the end they told me in my ear, 'Go sit in Clint Eastwood's lap, in the front row…and then we'll go right to the show.'"

Eastwood was not into the bit.

Vieira said she did as she was told, but the actor and director was visibly "ticked off" about it.

"It was clear that he did not want me sitting on his lap," Vieira explained. "And it was so awkward." To recreate how her interview with the Gran Torino star went, she got up from her chair and then slowly sat back down, smiling and laughing uncomfortably.

"And then like backing off [of Eastwood's lap], it was terrible," Vieira added.

Vieira doesn't blame Eastwood for how he reacted.

Vieira made it clear that she totally understood why he wasn't a fan of the joke.

"It wasn't that he was trying to be mean," Vieira told Menounos. "I think that he just found me annoying, and I've never seen him since. So, there you have it."

Menounos asked Vieira if she'd seen the most recent (at the time) film Eastwood had directed, American Sniper. She said she hadn't, but both women agreed that he's extremely talented.

Though Vieira hasn't seen Eastwood since this Oscars interview, in April of 2015, his son, Scott Eastwood, came onto The Meredith Vieira Show. The two of them discussed that how Scott's dad is a "man of few words." Then Vieira asked Scott about the best piece of advice he's ever gotten from his dad.

"Stay humble and work hard," The Longest Ride star answered.
