If You Have This Frozen Food at Home, Don't Eat It, FDA Says
Nearly 6,000 pounds of this popular food are being pulled from stores.
Cooking can often feel like a precarious affair from both food safety and palatability standpoints. If you overcook certain dishes, you'll end up with an inedible meal. If you undercook them, you might just make someone sick. Unfortunately, no matter how you prepare foods from one particular company right now, you may be putting your health at risk, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just announced that nearly 6,000 pounds of their products could be contaminated with potentially dangerous bacteria. Greenhead Lobster Products is recalling nearly 6,000 pounds of lobster meat.
On Oct. 2, 2021, the FDA announced that Bucksport, Maine-based Greenhead Lobster Products was recalling 5,749 pounds of frozen lobster meat.
The affected products, which were distributed to retailers throughout the U.S., include 1- and 2-lb. clear bags of Greenhead Lobster Frozen Cooked Claw and Knuckle Meat; 2-lb. clear bags of Greenhead Lobster Frozen Cooked Broken Meat; 2-lb. clear bags of Greenhead Lobster Frozen Cooked Tail Meat; 10.3-oz. printed bags of Greenhead Lobster Frozen Cooked Claw and Knuckle Meat; and 3-lb. clear bags of Greenhead Lobster Frozen Cooked Scored Claws. Specific best-if-used-by dates for the affected products can be found on the recall notice published by the FDA—you'll find them on the front of the bags of the lobster on a white label.

The lobster meat may be contaminated with Listeria.
According to the company's recall announcement, the lobster may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The contamination was discovered during a routine sampling of the company's products. At the time the recall was announced, there had been no reports of illness related to consumption of the recalled lobster.
Listeria can cause serious health issues.
Many people who consume food contaminated with Listeria experience typical food poisoning symptoms, including fever and diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Others may experience confusion, convulsions, headaches, fatigue, fever, loss of balance, and muscle aches.
However, in some rare cases, the bacterium can contribute to more serious health issues. Among pregnant individuals, Listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, and meningitis or sepsis in newborns; among older adults and immunocompromised individuals, it may also lead to more sepsis, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and even death.
Approximately 1,600 people in the U.S. suffer Listeria infections each year, among whom an average of 260 people die.
If you have the recalled lobster at home, don't eat it.
If you purchased the recalled lobster meat, don't eat it, the FDA notice says. Instead, return it to the store from which it was purchased to receive a full refund.
