These Are the 7 New COVID Hotspots in the U.S.

Case numbers are rising in these states and hospitals are becoming overwhelmed.

Both new cases and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are continuing to surge across the United States, with Reuters reporting that nearly half a million people across the country have contracted the disease in the last seven days. Three quarters of all U.S. states—38, to be exact—are reporting increases in the number of hospitalized patients compared to two weeks ago. The Midwest region is being hit particularly hard, but there are new emerging COVID hotspots in other areas of the country as well.

"We must take significant and collective actions," Andrea Palm of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services said at a news conference recently. "This is going to get worse before it gets better." CBS News reports that "the situation is especially dire in seven states … where many intensive care units are near or at capacity." What follows is the newest COVID hotspots, including their daily case rate (how many new cases are being reported per capita), infection rate (how many people the average sick person will infect), and positive test rate (what percentage of COVID tests are coming back positive) from Covid Act Now. We've also included each state's percent increase in cases in the last two weeks, according to data from The New York Times, ranking them by that percent increase.
