This Is the Only State Where COVID Cases Are Dropping

The news comes as 40 states saw new cases rise by at least 10 percent since last week.

Coronavirus numbers in the United States are currently surpassing the record highs the country reached over the summer. As the winter surge hurdles forward, 29 states have broken their previous single-day case records in the past month, with drastic increases in most of them, CNN reports. But this week, there's a single state that can lay claim to being the only one where COVID cases are currently dropping significantly: Missouri. According to data from Johns Hopkins University, 73,240 new cases were reported across the U.S. on Oct. 27, which represents a 21 percent increase from the previous week. The data also shows that 40 states saw a 10 percent increase or more in new cases from a week prior, and 9 were able to hold relatively steady with new cases increasing less than 10 percent. Missouri, however, was the only state in the Union to see a decrease of at least 10 percent over the seven-day period, CNN points out.

Missouri's lonely status paints a bleak picture for the months to come, with experts warning that some of the darkest days of the pandemic could lie ahead. "We're rising quickly. If we just go back about six, seven weeks ago to Labor Day, we were at about 35,000 cases a day," Ashish Jha, MD, dean of Brown University School of Public Health, told CNN. "I would not be surprised if we end up getting to 100,000 [new cases a day]."
