Here Is the Secret Gift Melania Trump Gave Michelle Obama on Inauguration Day
What was in that big blue Tiffany box?! Now we know.
One of the major highlights of Trump's Inauguration Day was the look on Michelle Obama's face when Melania Trump handed her a Tiffany's box as she and her husband greeted the departing president and first lady on the steps of the White House. Getting a gift from the new first lady isn't exactly protocol (though if there's one thing we know about the Trumps, it's that they have no problem breaking with longstanding traditions), and a lot of people thought it was a bit weird for Melania to make a gesture that was more suited to a dinner party than a handover of executive power.
The mystery gift also prompted a lot of questions, namely: Gold jewelry? Gold silverware? A note that says, "See you later, suckers?"
Well, in her first television interview since that day, Michelle finally revealed the year-long secret.
It was a picture frame.
She also explained to Ellen Degeneres why the exchange was so awkward:
"There's all this protocol. This is like a state visit, so they tell you that you're going to do this, they're going to stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I'm sort of like, 'OK, what am I supposed to do with this gift?' Everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box, and I'm thinking, 'Do we take the picture with [it]?'"
Luckily, like the good husband he is, Barack swooped in and handled it.
"And then my husband saved the day — see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out — no staff, no one. I was like, 'What do you do with the box?'"
The former first lady also dished on life after the White House. We already knew that it included a lot more working out, but there's been a lot of home decorating going on as well.
The Obamas chose to stay in Washington D.C. while their 16-year-old daughter, Sasha, finishes high school. And while Michelle is elated to have a house in which she can actually answer the doorbell, it seems the former president has gotten the short end of the stick in this house.
"He doesn't have enough closet space — sorry. He's got the smallest room for his office. And Sasha actually killed in this house — she has this two-room suite, it's all decked out. She's got a living room area and bedroom. She designed it. So he's really hating on her."
