The One Face Mask Hack You're Not Doing But Should Be

No more loose-fitting masks, thanks to this dentist's hack that went viral on TikTok.

Whether you live in a state where coronavirus cases are surging or one where things are a bit more under control, it's likely strongly recommended or required that you wear a face mask in public. And if you are like many people who use run-of-the-mill blue surgical masks as their primary means of face protection, you know that they don't always provide the best fit and can leave parts of your face open to exposure. But thanks to one medical expert's helpful face mask hack from TikTok, you have one less thing to worry about when it comes to wearing your face mask properly.

In a recent TikTok video that went viral, Olivia Cuid, MD, a dentist in Montreal, shared a simple but enormously effective trick that will have your bulky surgical mask fitting like a glove in a matter of seconds.

In the video, Cuid, who's TikTok handle is @oliviacuidmd, demonstrates the four easy steps to making a better fitting mask:

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Fold your mask in half.
  3. Tie each ear loop as close to the edge of the mask as possible.
  4. Open the mask and fold in the cloth to close up the small space around each ear loop.

Cuid says that her trick is especially helpful for "people with small faces," but is useful to everyone. "In absence of N95s, this might be a good alternative," she says in the video.
