Here's How Much COVID Cases Are Rising in Every State

See how each state is handling the virus by looking at its number of new cases per capita this past week.

With the coronavirus continuing to spread across the country, it can be tough to get a handle on which states are being hit the hardest. Some U.S. epicenters have begun to contain their outbreaks, while the virus is now spreading into new regions of the country. One of the best metrics we have for assessing how any given state is handling the pandemic is by looking at its number of new cases per capita for the past week. This seven-day average of daily new cases per 100,000 people tells us exactly how much COVID cases are rising in each state.

In fact, the daily new case rate is how the Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) determines the risk of coronavirus everywhere in the country. On their map, they assign each state a color based on the severity of its outbreak: green for fewer than 1 daily new case per 100,000 people, yellow for fewer than 10 cases per 100,000, orange for fewer than 25, and red for anything above that.

"Once a community reaches the red risk level, stay-at-home orders become necessary again," the HGHI experts explain. But beyond helping determine which states should consider another lockdown, the daily new case rate can help us get a sense of the bigger picture of where COVID is starting to take over.

Ranked from lowest to highest, this is the seven-day average of daily new cases per capita in every state, as of Aug. 3. Read on to see whether your state's COVID risk level is green, yellow, orange, or red.
