A recent change to this national retailer's policy means these people are no longer exempt.

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, stepping out in public for most of 2020 has meant putting on a face mask. And even though each state or city has been left to establish their own rules on face covering requirements, certain major companies have instituted mask rules of their own to protect their staff and shoppers nationwide. Now, this list includes Costco, which just instituted a strict new mask rule for customers in their stores, strengthening their previous requirement. In a statement released on Nov. 10, beloved wholesale supply retailer Costco announced that they would be beefing up their existing mask mandate so that everyone who enters the store must don a face mask or face shield except for children under the age of two. A previous policy that was put in place on May 4 had allowed those with medical conditions to be exempt.

"If a member has a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask, they must wear a face shield at Costco," the company's president and CEO, Craig Jelinek, said in the statement. "This updated policy may seem inconvenient to some, however we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience. Our goal is to continue to provide a safe shopping environment for our members and guests, and to provide a safe work environment for our employees."

Costco also says that customers should practice social distancing while shopping at any of their locations. The retailer, which also holds special shopping hours for high-risk customers above the age of 60 at some locations, points out that any "members who are unable to wear a mask or face covering" can make use of delivery options available on their website.

But Costco isn't the only major retailer making face coverings a requirement. Read on for other popular stores where you have to put on a mask before entering, and for more on where the virus is starting to take hold, check out These 22 States Are Starting to Lock Down Again.

Despite the fact that the large majority of their stores originally had face-covering mandates due to local ordinances, Kohl's still went the extra mile over the summer and required all customers to wear masks when shopping at any of their store locations. "We've made the decision to take a consistent approach across our entire store fleet," Kohl's said in a statement. "Beginning Monday, July 20, we will require all customers to wear a face-covering while shopping." Target also began making masks mandatory over the summer with a new requirement that went into effect on August 1, the retailer confirmed to USA Today. However, unlike Costco, the mandate excludes "those with underlying medical conditions and young children." Target also provides disposable masks at store entrances for anyone who doesn't have a face covering. "With the recent spike in COVID-19 infections, we're joining others in taking the next step and requiring all customers to wear face coverings when entering any of our stores throughout the country effective Monday, July 20," the company said in a statement over the summer.
