Here's Carrie Fisher's Most Epic Put-Down
It's a burn that still lives on—30 years later.
Carrie Fisher died of sudden cardiac died from sleep apnea and other causes on December 27, 2016, at the age of 60. But her legacy lives on not only in her iconic role as Princess Leia, but also her biting wit and brilliant come-backs (not to mention Mark Hamill's beautiful tributes, reminding people that no one is ever really gone).
In 1987, Fisher was on The Tonight Show, in an episode guest-hosted by comedian Gary Shandling, where he recalled an interesting exchange between the two of them.
"I first met Carrie on The Tonight Show about four years ago. Johnny [Carson] was hosting then," he said, addressing both the audience and Fisher herself. "And I was sitting there and you said, 'You're funny.' And I said 'Would you like to come see me perform?' And you gave me your phone number and said 'Call Me.' And four days later, you married Paul Simon. Four days."
Fisher gave him her signature pointed look, and responded, "One of the reasons I married him was to get out of the date with you."
The video clip doesn't appear to be online, but you can see screenshots of the exchange below.
The tweet has been retweeted almost 6,000 times, because it's a pretty epic burn. One user wrote, "This woman always made bad choices look smart."
As the legend herself once said, "If my life wasn't funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable."
