Tracking the COVID outbreak has been a rollercoaster this summer. Just as some states saw their numbers plummeting, others would ascend those upward tracks toward dangerous new heights. As we enter fall, the country is strapping in for another ride: when you look at the U.S. as a whole, cases are climbing. As of Oct. 4, The New York Times reports that there has been an 8 percent increase in cases across the U.S. compared with the average two weeks earlier. Despite claims that we've turned a corner on the pandemic, it's clear the spread is still rampant.

However, while major surges rage across the Midwest and increasingly the West, there are some states that are currently beating back the virus. Most of these states are in the Southeast, which saw some of the worst outbreaks the summer had to offer. Using data from The New York Times COVID tracker, we've pulled the number of new daily cases per 100,000 residents, as well as the percentage of decrease in cases since two weeks ago. These key metrics help paint a picture of how far each state has come, and how far they still have to go. Read on to find out which 11 states are currently winning their COVID battles.
