New Survey Says This Is the Age When Sex Gets Great

It's not just a young person's game anymore.

Sex is great at any age. But, when you're young and you don't know what you're really doing—nor do you have the confidence to ask for what you want—it can be a little… underwhelming. Once you get older, however, you might find that it's lost some of its youthful zeal. Wondering at what age sex really hits its stride? Well, a new survey by the over-50 dating app Lumen has the answer.

Researchers recently surveyed more than 2,000 adults between the ages of 50 and 80, and they found that the average age at which respondents believed the best sex began was 27. But that doesn't mean it doesn't get even better from there.

According to the survey's findings, about a quarter (22 percent) of respondents think their sex lives are even more adventurous in their 50s and beyond than they were in their younger days. Of that group, 57 percent attribute that to feeling less inhibited, 38 percent stated that it was because spontaneity keeps their relationship alive, and another 24 percent said they simply had more time to experiment now.

Another recent survey from sex toy company LoveHoney also found that folks over 55 are more sexually satisfied than younger adults. An impressive 95 percent of those 55 and older by the researchers said that they've been sexually fulfilled, compared to only 68 percent of 18 to 24 year olds.

Wednesday Martin, a cultural anthropologist and the author of Untrue: Why Nearly Everything We Believe About Women, Lust, and Infidelity is Wrong and How the New Science Can Set Us Free, believes that women are the driving force behind this new sexual lease on life.

"As we age, we become more entitled to receive rather than merely provide pleasure," Martin recently told Best Life. "We know our bodies better, and know what we like sexually, and we have more experience asking for what we want. In our 50s and beyond, many women find ourselves with more power than ever before. Older women, in my informed view, are helping close the gendered pleasure gap! This is the great, untold story of the upside to women aging in America."
