All of the men that I know say that every woman that they’ve ever had sex with has had a vaginal orgasm–meaning that they climaxed through penetration alone–and yet none of the women I know have ever actually had one, even though it’s pretty high up on all of our bucket lists. Which bring me to the question at hand: how does a woman actually achieve a vaginal orgasm?

My personal experience is corroborated by research, as one 2010 study found that 67 percent of women fake orgasm during sex. One of the most interesting aspects of the study is that it pinned the blame for this on a “sexual script” that mandated that “men are responsible for women’s orgasms.”

Recently, I took a class called “Ladies Come First: A Woman’s Guide to Accessing Her Vaginal ‘O'” at the V.Club, a newly-opened sexual education center in New York City. One of the most incredible and empowering lessons that I came away with was that, to a large extent, a woman’s ability to have a vaginal orgasm depends on her, not the man. As you’ll see, most of the positions outlined in this article require the woman to be on top. Some of this is psychological, since a woman needs to be fully at ease in order to climax. Some of this, however, is purely anatomical. Either way, it was thrilling to realize that I don’t need to wait for a knight-in-shining-armor to get my fix. All a man needs to do is supply a functioning penis, and the woman can do the rest.

So read on to discover the positions that, according to our licensed trainer, are almost guaranteed to get you that seemingly mythical vaginal orgasm.

How to have a vaginal orgasm:

1. The Mermaid

“Start in reverse cowgirl position. Curve your back in angry cat pose. Arch your back in a cow pose and dive down. Repeat this dive in three directions–forward, to the left and to the right.” You’ll notice that many of the descriptions for these positions utilize yoga terms, so it’s good to familiarize yourself with them if you don’t already practice yoga.

2. The Hot Spot

“Start in missionary position with legs up on his shoulders. Squeeze and release butt and thighs.” Note: it’s possible for a woman to have a clitoral orgasm just by rubbing her thighs together, so making this motion in this particular position can be especially pleasurable.

3. From Cheek to Cheek

“Start in cowgirl position. Lower onto hip with one hip lifted. Raise back up with the other hip lifted.” Note: one of the main mistakes people make in penile-vaginal intercourse is that they tend to stick to a back-and-forth movement when circular motions like this one are often more effective. This also happens to be a good thigh workout for the woman.

4. The Three Whirlpools

“Start in doggy position. Circle your hips. Squeeze your butt. Curve your back and do abdominal lock.” The abdominal lock–also known as uddiyana bandha– is central to hatha yoga, and it consists of sucking in your stomach at the end of an exhale. The description says to start out in “doggy position,” because the man enters from behind, but this is not to be confused with downward dog. You want to say in tabletop, which means you want to be on all fours and keep the back straight, even if an arched back is more visually appealing. It also helps to keep the legs together in order to tighten the pelvic floor.

5. Push It Real Good

“Start in cowgirl position. Make 3-4 circles with your hips around the head of the penis. Lower all the way down to the base. Once at the bottom, push it!” By “push it,” they mean pulsing your vagina as you would when you’re giving birth. It’s important to go slow with this one, as cowgirl position is the one that most often leads to penile fracture.

6. The Rock-Climb

“Start in T-shape formation where you are on your back and he is on his side. Squeeze pelvic floor muscles three times at escalating intensities. Make light squeezes then resume the climb.” As a reminder: squeezing the pelvic floor consists of doing the same thing you do when you stop urinating mid-stream. This one is a little complicated because it requires a specific series of squeezes: small squeeze, bigger squeeze, biggest squeeze, then plateau with three pulsating squeezes. Rinse and repeat.

7. The Corkscrew

“Lay down on your side with him kneeling in front of you. Place your leg onto his shoulder or hip. Move your entire upper body and hips forward and back.” Note: placing the leg on his shoulder is more visually appealing but placing it on the hip makes things tighter, so the choice is up to you based on your priorities. The hip motion here is a bit of a challenge but anyone who has done side planks will be familiar with the idea of rotating your body while resting on your elbow.

8. The R&R

“Lie on your stomach with him straddling you. Move one hip up then back down. Move the other hip up then back down.” With this one, it helps to use a bolster so that your hips are in the air to get the alignment right, and you want to move your hips side to side as though doing an army crawl. The nice thing about this position is that it stimulates both the G-spot and the K-spot, which is located between the cervix and the anus.

9. Slow and Steady

“Start in cowgirl position. Gently stretch the skin on his groin with your hands. Lower down on the top third of penis, then rise back up to the top.” Note: you don’t want to go all the way down, but you do want to go all the way back up to the tip. Since it’s cowgirl, make sure you move slowly.

10. The Gotcha

“Start in doggy position. When he’s about to enter your butt, squeeze your butt and curve your back.” This one is a little weird, because the reason it’s called “Gotcha” is due to the fact that it’s an easy way to slip the penis into the vagina organically when he’s trying to do anal. But, hey, a little playfulness in bed never hurts…

11. The Chest Bump

“Start in missionary position. When he thrusts forward, arch you back and stick your chest out. Repeat with every thrust.” This is a really fun one for well-endowed women.

12. Beauty and Grace

“Start in cowgirl position. Lean back propping yourself up with your hands. Open your knees as you move forward. Close your knees as you move back.” We all know that men are visual creatures, and this provides some great optics as the man can see his penis entering the vagina.

13. The Spiral

This one is particularly good for the big V-O. “Start in reverse cowgirl position. Slide down his penis in a spiral motion. At base, circle your hips around a few times. Rise back up in spiral motion.” This one also provides a nice visual in the form of a sexy hair toss. Remember that these positions require a little work and patience, and you won’t necessarily climax the first time around. As always, be sure to talk to your partner about your specific boundaries and needs. And men: that goes for you too, since studies have shown that men who express their feelings and interest have better sex lives.
