You Can Ride Off in the Queen’s Used Bentley for $285,000

Her four-year old Mulsanne is officially up for sale (with no takers yet).

One of the things we love about Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II—aside from her Corgi fascination—is an exquisite taste in fine automobiles. It is Bentley (not Rolls, thank you very much) that takes top honors in the royal household, with two £10m purpose-built Bentley state limousines currently in Her Majesty’s fleet. Plus, a new Bentayga is on the way.

With chariots of that caliber in her garage, it’s perhaps understandable that the House of Windsor, wishing to avoid appearances of excess, parted with this pristine, four-year-old Mulsanne, the car once used to deliver the Queen to her Diamond Jubilee celebrations and for visits to 10 Downing Street. It was put up for sale for nearly £200,000—or $285,000 at current exchange rates—at this past weekend’s Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Revival car festival in the UK. (While a 1968 Land Rover also used by the Queen sold, the Mulsanne is still available.)

“This car presents a collector with the rare opportunity to purchase a car that has been used to good effect by our longest reigning monarch,” reports a Bramley Motor Cars spokesman near Guildford in Surrey.

In traditional British Racing Green with a light tan interior trimmed in walnut burr veneer, the 2012 Mulsanne has the classic Bentley 6.75-litre V8 engine that rockets the massive 2.5-ton car to 60mph in 5.1 seconds, with a top of speed of 184mph. However splendid it may be, the car is light on Bond-like gadgetry. Perhaps explaining why her newer, bespoke Bentleys feature armor-protected, blast-resistant engines and kevlar-reinforced tires, among other trick features, upon the insistence of someone in the royal service detail. We suspect Her Majesty prefers the Mulsanne. For only an £87,850 premium over a typical 2012 model you, too, can share the love.

A word of advice, though, for potential owners: you’d be wise to reset the sat-nav. The home address is currently listed as “Windsor, Berkshire.”
